Learning of the catastrophic fire that destroyed the beautiful Cathédrale de Notre Dame de Paris, my heart stopped. “How could this happen?”, I silently questioned myself; reminiscing about the several Masses attended, and the music that filled the edifice. This included Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, where everything was encompassed in soft candlelight. It seemed as if the building itself took on a life of its own; breathing hope and joy to all those waiting to gain entrance outside with me on that particularly cold, winter’s night...
This special tierce de Picardie award encompasses the year beginning in March 2020 to present. For those of us who long for, and continue to seek out, hope and joy in the midst of this global pandemic; for those who have succumbed, and those who have been left behind... This year’s award goes to you. As we all move forward from this catastrophic event, let us understand and accept that a life without hope and joy is a denial of the very fiber of our existence.
